Oral Wegovy® Is Here: What to Know About the First GLP-1 Weight Loss Pill

For many people on a weight loss journey, the idea of a daily pill instead of a weekly injection has been a long-awaited option. That option is now a reality because in December of 2025 the FDA approved Oral Wegovy®—making it the first and only oral GLP-1 medication approved specifically for weight management in adults. Oral Wegovy became available in January 2026 at most major pharmacies. Here’s what you need to know about how it works, what the research shows, and how it compares to the injectable version.

What Is Oral Wegovy®?

Oral Wegovy® is a daily tablet containing semaglutide which is the same active ingredient found in the injectable version of Wegovy® and Ozempic®. While the injection is given once a week, the oral form is taken as a pill every day. The medication works the same way mimicking the GLP-1 hormone to help regulate appetite, reduce food cravings, and support sustained weight loss for patients.

The tablet is available in four strengths: 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg, and 25 mg with a gradual dose increase over time up to the 25 mg maintenance dose.

Who Qualifies?

Candidates for Oral Wegovy® therapy include individuals who have not met weight loss goals (loss of at least 5% of total body weight at 3-6 months) with comprehensive lifestyle intervention and also who have:

Obesity and a body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m2 or
A BMI of 27 to 29.9 kg/m2 plus one or more weight-related comorbidities or
Central adiposity (eg, elevated waist circumference) plus one or more weight-related comorbidities (Carotid Artery Stenosis, Coronary Artery Disease, Stroke, Myocardial Infarction, etc).

What Does the Research Show?

The FDA approval was based on the OASIS 4 clinical trial, which studied oral semaglutide 25 mg in adults with overweight or obesity (without diabetes).

The results, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, showed meaningful weight loss:

Participants lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks.
With full treatment adherence, average weight loss reached 16.6%.
About one-third of adherent participants (34.4%) achieved 20% or more weight loss.
Serious adverse events were actually less frequent with oral semaglutide (3.9%) than placebo (8.8%).

These results are comparable to what the injectable version achieved in earlier trials, making the oral form a strong alternative for those who prefer not to use injections.

Pill vs. Injection: Key Differences

Both forms contain semaglutide and work through the same mechanism, but there are some practical differences worth knowing:

Dosing schedule: The pill is taken once daily by mouth; the injection is once a week.
How to take it: The pill must be taken every morning on an empty stomach with no more than 4 ounces of plain water followed by a 30-minute wait before eating, drinking, or taking other medications.
Storage: The pill does not require refrigeration, unlike the injectable pen.
Weight loss: Clinical trials show comparable results—13.6% with the pill vs. 14.9% with the injection over similar timeframes.
Side effects: The most common side effects are similar (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), although the pill showed slightly higher rates of nausea and vomiting in trials.

For some patients, the convenience of skipping needles and refrigeration makes the pill a more practical fit. For others, the once-a-week simplicity of the injection may be preferable. The right choice depends on your lifestyle and what your healthcare provider recommends.

It’s All About SNAC!

There’s a reason Oral Wegovy® comes with such specific morning instructions, and it comes down to one little ingredient: SNAC.

SNAC is a tiny helper built into every tablet that makes the pill work. Without it, your stomach would break the medication down before any of it could reach your bloodstream. With it, the semaglutide gets about a 30-minute window to be absorbed.

The catch is that the window closes fast. Food, coffee, juice, or another pill taken too soon can shut SNAC down, which means less of the medication actually reaches your body.

So the morning routine isn’t just a suggestion. Sticking to it is the single biggest thing you can do to make sure the pill actually works.

Cost and Availability

Oral Wegovy® is available at more than 70,000 pharmacies across the U.S.

Patients with commercial insurance coverage may pay as little as $25 per month and for those without insurance, Novo Nordisk has offered a price of $149 per month through their savings programs. Medicare patients should also see relief soon: the Medicare Bridge program is expected to offer Oral Wegovy® for a $50 co-pay effective July 1, 2026.
